Chapter 15

They monopolized her time in the morning, and they monopolized her time in the afternoon. When dinner came around, it was with amusement that Sin noted they’d included her, too—something that wouldn’t have happened had his mother not presented the invitation herself, and her doing so meant either of two things: she already accepted Jessa as his fiancée.

Or she simply was keeping Jessa closer to watch the shifter’s every move.

Either way, another thing was notable: Elize distancing herself and not present in any of the activities today, which meant Victoria was done—for the time being—pushing the woman on Sin.

Good.

Still, this monopoly thing was getting annoying, and he decided it was time to end it. To do that without upsetting his stepmother, he joined them for dinner, sitting beside Jessa and juggling two things: conversation about deeper topics now that his father wasn’t around to be suspicious about it…

And trying not to get too distracted by Jessa.

There was nothing in particular that he should be distracted about, considering she was wearing normal clothes: a white dress, sure, loose like earlier in the battle, but modern enough and down to below her knees. Her shoulders were visible and toned to perfection, and her hair was up in a no-nonsense ponytail that shouldn’t be pleasing. There was nothing technically distracting about that.

Nothing at all.

Dessert was served, an ice-cold concoction with coconut cream that melted on his tongue. He praised Kimmy for all the good food, teased the twins for the pranks they pulled on some of the boys trying to court them…teased his mother, too, when she reprimanded them over their too-playful ways.

Then he coughed when Jessa brushed his knee repeatedly, then placed her hand on his knee: a warning, but the heat of her palm shot up his thigh so fast, hardening his cock.

Making it uncomfortable in his pants as he tried to shift his erection.

Sin knew what she wanted, so he finished his dessert and gave his mother a very indulgent smile. “That was lovely. Dinner was lovely, and I’m glad I have the family’s support in this venture.”

“Of course,” Victoria said. “We’re preparing for it, Sinclair.”

“And I won’t disappoint you, of course,” he returned, not pressing the matter. Not questioning what they would do if he lost the race to clan leadership, because obviously, that meant one thing: death. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’d like to take my fiancée out on a stroll to the gardens and…acquaint her with how we keep our lawns very manicured. It might interest her as much as sewing those godawful things seem to interest Annie.”

“Hey!” Annie protested, pouting. “It’s called knitting, and I do find it boring now and have switched hobbies.”

She was reprimanded, of course, but didn’t seem to mind it as she teased Victoria back—in turn, allowing Sin and Jessa to excuse themselves without much ceremony. Kimmy’s eyes met his before they left the dining room entrance, a silent question there.

Where are you really going?

He inclined his head in silent answer.
